Colour Detectives

Our students enjoyed being colour detectives in our classroom.  They worked with a partner to find items in our classroom that matched the colour posted on our easel.  Here are the results of their detective work:

International Dot Day!

September 15th, 2014

Our class registered to participate in International Dot Day.  Over 1.1 million teachers and students around the world signed up to participate in activities on September 15th.  We read the book, "The Dot" by Peter Reynolds.  We created dot art - by painting dots in picture frames and colouring on coffee filters.  We made a class book using dot stickers and math.  We also painted a large dot collaboratively.  You can see some of our photos below:

Welcome to a New Year of Kindergarten!
A Tour of Important Areas in our Room

Firstly, we would like to welcome all the new parents to our blog!  Our blog will be the place where you can see the learning and amazing things that happen in Kindergarten!

We would like to start out by showing you some areas in our room and explaining to you why they are so important for your child's learning experience.

Here is a glance at our environment.  We have worked to create an environment that provides experiences that encourage the children to learn, no matter where they go in our room.

The writing area is ready for them to start recording their stories on paper.  They will also use writing here in many authentic ways such as letter writing, creating cards, lists, writing books, documentation of what they notice, and so much more!

Our Science table is now filled with items for our first inquiry on our five senses.  We will be learning about "How do we observe the world?"  We will explore our outside environment using our five senses.  We will introduce the following observation statements:  "I see...I think...I wonder."

We have a creative art area in our room!  The visual arts are so important in developing motor skills, language development, decision making, visual learning, inventiveness, and creativity.

These are our math shelves with manipulatives and math trays.

These are our Literacy activities with a variety of literacy experiences to assist our students develop their language skills.

Our big blocks centre is always a popular destination!  Here the children come up with plans, collaborate, problem solve, create, design, test their designs and build.  Block play also encourages children to start making predictions and comparisons.  They will also experiment with cause and effect, stability, balance, gravity, force and motion.

Our house centre is where the kids practice real life situations.  Here the students will use many math and literacy skills as they create jobs and life situations.  A lot of important social skills are learned here also; sharing, taking turns, cooperating, impulse control and organizing.  They will problem solve, negotiate, organize and plan.  This area will change according to interests, inquiries and projects that will go on in our room.

We are excited to see how our room will change as the students make this room theirs through the year!
