Some People are Worth Melting For...

 

 

Our students enjoyed creating melted snowman art.  We built a snowman in our classroom during morning circle time.  We used a melting snowman kit, and the students were amazed to see our sculpture "melt" during the morning.  In the afternoon, we challenged them to create their own melted snowman using paint and the parts of a snowman. 



Valentine's Day Gifts

for our Families

 

 

We hope our families enjoyed their Valentine's Day gifts.  We created Andy Warhol inspired artwork using our students skills as painters and their handprints (to create a true keepsake!)



Our Tree of Love

 

 

Oh our amazing ever changing tree!  We have used our tree for Remembrance Day in November, as a Wishing Tree in December, a New Year's tree in January, and now as a Tree of Love.  Our students were invited to finish the sentence "I love..." with their ideas and thoughts about things they love.  The tree is beautiful, and we have received many positive comments from other teachers and visitors to our school.



Dressing for Winter!

 

 

Winter has definitely arrived!  And with the snow and colder temperatures, it has become more challenging for our students to dress themselves independently for outdoor play.  We created a chart for them to use to assist with dressing.  Step #1 - Snowpants.  Step #2 - Boots.  Step #3 - Coat.  Step #4 - Scraf or Neck Warmer.  Step #5 - Hat.  Step #6 - Backpack.  Step #7 - Mittens or Gloves.  It is wonderful to see many of our students referring to the chart when dressing themselves.  You will hear them saying to one another and to us, "I'm on step 3" or "I'm on step 6."  They take great pride in being able to complete their winter dressing with minimal assistance.  Yeah boys and girls!



Happy Valentine's Day!

 

 

Our students enjoyed participating in electives this year - a first for Jack Miner Kindergarten students!  Our first week was a visit from a librarian from the Whitby Public Library.  The students participated in songs, finger plays, using shakers and listening to winter themed stories.  The second week was a Valentine's Day card making elective.  Our students were divided into groups, and worked with teachers and volunteers to make a keepsake card for a family member.

Writing at the Art Easel

 

 

We were thrilled recently when two of our students decided to add lines to the painting paper at the art easel!  It was so exciting to see them take their learning from our guided writing sessions, and apply it to their art!  Way to go friends!



Winter Science

Is Snow Good for Plants and Animals?

Due to the very cold temperatures recently, it was a challenge to find enough soft snow to cover the thermometer.

 

All the scientists of Room 132 assisted by bringing snow to cover the thermometer.  Great team work!

We were experimenting to see if it was true that snow is good for plants and animals during the winter.  We read in a book that snow acts as a blanket for plants and animals.  We wanted to see which thermometer would show a warmer temperature.  Ask your child to share the results of our latest experiment.
