Millipede vs. Centipede Inquiry

What did we find?

 

 

 

During an outdoor education period, some of our students found a small creature in the Kindergarten yard.  There was much debate about what it might be - some students thought we had found a worm, some a centipede, some thought a baby creature because it was so small.  We placed our new friend in a bug catcher, and started to research what it might be.

 

We wanted to share our learning with the school.  We created an inquiry board in the hallway outside of our classroom.  We shared facts we learned about our millipede, plus illustrations created by our students.  The scientists in our class did a wonderful job sharing their learning!  Yeah class!

 

 



Fall Inspired Art

Our artists at work - we traced the outline of their leaf onto the paper, and the students added the veins using black sharpie markers.  The fall colour was added using watercolour paint.  The results - beautiful!

Play Dough Self-Portraits

We provided our students with play dough mats of faces.  Their creativity is clearly shown in the photos of their self-portraits.  Many of our students returned to this centre again and again to create a new self-portrait.

 

Language Centres

Learning about our ABC's!

 

Last week our students began to participate in our 1st language centres.  We divided the class into a Junior Kindergarten group and a Senior Kindergarten group.  The students are learning what it means to "stay and play" at a centre.  The groups are assigned to a centre - where they are to explore, interact with the materials, share with their peers, and stay until the end of the centre time.  Our students were amazing!  The boys and girls are learning/reviewing printing their names, printing letters, forming letters using a variety of materials and tools, writing and reading sight words.

International Dot Day is Here!!!

Our students are participating in the celebrations for International Dot Day!  We have listened to the story, The Dot by Peter Reynolds, and learned The Dot song.  We will be creating art inspired by the book, and learning that everyone is an artist!  We have created watercolour mini-dots to decorate our classroom door, a large collaborative dot painted with tempera paint and sidewalk chalk dots in our Kindergarten yard.  We will continue to explore our creative sides this week, as we make lots and lots of dots.  Here are some photos of our dots. (more will be added during the week!)
