Snow Day Fun!

Our principal encouraged our students to build, build, build with all the snow in the school yard today.  Our students LOVED the idea of working together to build snowmen, snow sculpture and snow art!  I took some photos of their work - very impressive!

Our Grade 6 Visit:

We visited our Grade 6 friends today following lunch time.  The Grade 6 students had their projects displayed around the classroom, and each child was allowed time to visit the displays.  Our Kindergarten students practiced asking questions about the planets, and also practiced their listening skills as the Grade 6 "experts" shared information.

I took some photos of the projects.  It would be fun for your child to view the photos here on the blog, and share any information they learned today.  We will also be using these photos as we work to prepare our own class project on space.

We are looking forward to a fun day on Wednesday!  We will be visiting in the Grade 6 classroom to learn more about the planets and outer space.  The Grade 6 class has prepared a short video for us, and the students will also be sharing their space projects.

We will also continue with our writing lesson from Monday, and practice labeling our own drawings.  The students will draw an illustration of themselves dressed for winter, and label as many parts of their drawing as possible.  On Monday, the students cut and paste to label a picture given to them.

On Wednesday, the boys and girls will also complete a "rich" math task in measurement.  The students will be asked to select an object from our classroom, and select their own choice of measurement tool.  A "rich" task needs to be open ended, allowing opportunities to different answers.  It involves critical thinking, multi-steps and higher level thinking.  Questioning following the activity is another important part of a "rich" task.  I know our students will do very well with this task!

Monday, February 25th:

We had great excitement in our classroom today as we learned about colour mixing!  We have wonderful artists in our room, and we had many artists who remembered about colour mixing from last year!  Way to go Senior Kindergarteners!

The students are creating their own colour wheels using paint, and they are very excited to see their primary colours turn to secondary colours.

100th Day of School!

I was looking for a new idea for our celebration of the 100th day of school.  I happened to see a writing/art idea on Pinterest that would be perfect for the 100th day!

The students created a bucket list of things they wanted to do before they turned 100 years old.  They wrote their ideas on a page entitled, "Before I am 100, I will..."  For the art part of the project, each student created a portrait of themselves as a 100 year old man or woman.  We use fabric samples for the shirt, paper plates and torn paper for the faces.  We have received many compliments on the finish products.  I will take photos of the individual projects, and post them on my blog this week.  If you happen to be in the school, please feel free to stop by the bulletin board outside our classroom to see the art and writing.
